SPECIES AND MISCELLANEOUS HYBRIDS

These iris make very nice additions to the garden. All will grow in regular good garden soil. Many are to be especially considered for the water garden as they can also grow in shallow water. Founders of Signa Medal (SPEC) highest award for species iris.

CRESTED IRISES (EVANSIA)

These prefer afternoon shade and a humusy soil. A woodland setting with dappled sunlight will keep them very happy. In place of beards, they have crests that resemble the comb of a rooster.

I. tectorum (1871) Japanese roof iris. Beautiful blue-lavender. Exquisite foliage and flowers Sun to shade. We find that even though this gem grows and blooms in sun or shade that it is performs best in dappled shade. A drought tolerant iris, near so as bearded iris that resents too much care. 12-14 tall. $7.00
I. tectorum `Alba' (1871 Japanese roof iris. Beautiful white form. Exquisite foliage and flowers Sun to shade. I. tectorum WOOLONG (Waddick 2002) Blue-violet with lighter style arms; falls are blue-violet with darker spots and white crests. Larger and more vigorous than the species. $9.00

I. laevigatae

(Water Irises) Can also be grown in marshy ground or pools. Regular garden soil is fine if extra water is provided during spring growth. Sun to light shade.
I. laevigate albopurpurea `MONSTROSA' Deep blue area and broad white border. $10.00

I. pseudacorus & hybrids

These will grow in regular garden soil or will grow in several inches of standing water all year. These usually grow a little taller when grown in water.
I. pseudacorus Yellow form. Tall 3-4'. $6.50 3/$16.00 6/$30.00
I. pseudacorus x ? (possibly ensata) A medium yellow that blooms much later than our other pseudacorus. Many buds per scape. $6.00
FROST END (Huber 2003) White with purplish signal and slightly ruffled falls. White style arms with a lighter midrib. $12.00
KING CLOVIS (Tankesley-Clark 94) Brilliant yellow with a brown signal. $8.00
ROY DAVIDSON (Hager 87) Large yellow with a few brown veins and interesting brown signal. $6.00
PIXIE WON (Copeland 97) Violet standards with white midrib; falls violet with a dark purple halo around yellow signal; cream white styles. I. pseudacorus x I. ensata $10.00

I. versicolor

Native to eastern North America including Canada and as far west as northern Minnesota. Upright foliage 24-30". Many branches and flowers. Blue Flag is perfect for sunny, boggy areas but also grows well

JOHN WOOD (Wood/Lineberger 98) S. medium maroon veined darker. F. velvety deep red violet with white ray pattern. Flower stems are black. Founders of Signa Medal (SPEC) 2006 $8.00

I. virginica

Native from Virginia to florida and southeast to Louisiana. These Blue Flags are very happy in a damp boggy spot or will do well in regular garden soil.
I. virginica "Pink" Lovely pink form. Many buds per stock. $7.00
I. virginica `POND LILAC DREAM' (Speichert 96) Stands white with pale lavender pink veining; falls, white with deeper veining, yellow signals. Petals are rounded with flaring form. Flower shown is just opening. $7.50
I. virginica shrevei Light orchid-blue veins on a white ground fusing to light orchid-blue.Yellow signal. $7.00
I. virginica x I. versicolor Blue violet veined deeper violet. Yellow signal patterned white. Unusual and interesting black stems. $6.50

OTHER SPECIES IRIS


BELISE (Simonet 67) I. maritima X I.. carthaliniae. Lavender-blue standards; falls white heavily veined and edged lavender-blue. $7.00
I. carthalinae Spuria species. Tall with blue-white flowers. $6.50 or 3/$18.00
TERRA NOVA (Walter/Abrego 85) A spuria iris. Likes heat. Stands are russet brown; falls golden brown deeper at the edge, bright gold signal. $7.00
I. graminia (1753) Dwarf Spuria species. Graceful fountain of narrow foliage 12-14". Delightful small purple flowers appear early May. Delicious fragrance. $6.50
I. koreana Discovered in South Korea in 1997. The vivid yellow flowers have a narrow brown halo on the falls and are 1 1/2" in diameter. The flower stem is 6" tall with leaves eventually elongating to 12". Semi-evergreen to evergreen here. Currently growing with 3 to 4 hours of sun here in the garden. They will grow in shade. Full sun has not been tested here. Drought tolerant. $14.00
I. orientalis Can grow to 5' and likes full sun and adequate moisture. Large white flowers have a large yellow blotch on the falls. $7.00
Pacific Coast Natives (PCN's) These have narrow evergreen foliage growing to 12-14" here and would like some afternoon shade From our seedlings mixed colors only. $6.00
MAGICIAN'S MAGIC (Nicholls 2001) Magician's Magic is a selected form of I. unguicularis ssp. cretensis grown from seed. This winter bloomer was in flower from January to April in our gardens in 2000 and was selected for its long bloom time and reliability. In colder years, it does not bloom quite as early but is still in bloom longer than our other I. unguicularis. It grows 5-7" tall and is fragrant. It is such a joy to have the flowers burst forth when not much else is happening in the garden. Hardy here zone 6B with no protection. Should be hardy Zone 6A with some protection to Zone 10. $15.00
