Amelanchier X grandiflora `Autumn Brilliance' (Juneberry, Shadbush, Service tree
or sarvis-tree) A lovely small tree 20-25' with white flowers in pendulous racemes 2-4"
long in late March/early April. The small fruits are relished by birds. Fall color may
be brilliant red - variable from year to year as with all amelanchiers. The tree has a
very naturalistic look and blends well on the edges of woodlands, near ponds and stream
banks; blends into shrub borders especially with an evergreen background. Will tolerate

Aucuba japonica `Crotonifolia' `Crotonifolia' has large dark green glossy leaves
that are finely speckled with yellow. Aucuba is great for the shade garden where other
plants turn up their toes. It does well under the shade of trees remaining compact in
growth habit. A good plant to lighten the area of heavy shade under mature trees. Can
be planted on the north or east side of the house as well. Winter shade keeps the leaves
from bleaching. Very pest and disease free. A fairly slow grower to 6' x 8' Our ten year
old aucuba are about 5' tall. Responds well to pruning. This is a male cultivar.

Aucuba japonica `Golden King' `Golden King' is similiar to `Contonifolia' above
with the exception that it has much more striking golden variegated speckling. This is a male cultivar.

Acuba japonica `Limbata'
This cultivar has wide yellow leaf margins that surround the variegated green centers.
Very striking with its glossy leaves. This shade-loving evergreen shrub will provide a bright
spot in the garden. This is a female plant that will produce red berries in winter if pollinated

Betula nigra `Summer Cascade' PP15105 A weeping river birch! Beautiful exfoliating bark
exposes the inner bark of gray-brown, salmon-brown, cinnamon-brown to reddish brown. Great used
as a specimen plant or focal point especially when combined with water features. Does not like

Callicarpa japonica 'Leucocarpa' (White beautyberry) This is the white berried form of the beautyberry.
The white berries light up the fall garden with the dazzling fruits starting in September. A great addition for "the
white garden". Easily pruned as blooms and berries appear on the current seasons growth. Plant habit is beautifully
arching with the weight of the berries. A rare white berried plant for the garden. 4-6' in height and width. Full sun

Calycanthus `Venus' PPAF New and Very Rare. Introduced in 2003. This eagerly awaited of
the newest interspecific hybrids bred by Dr. Thomas Rainey at the Fletcher Research Station is now
available. Large ivory yellow buds transform into large, 3-4" multipetaled white flowers with
yellow and purple infusions in the center. The flowers have a wonderful fragrance with aromas of
strawberries and melons. Spring flowering with some additional flowers being produced throughout
the growing season. [12' x 8'W]. Full sun in the northern regions to light shade in the

Calycanthus (Sinocalycalycanthus) raulstonii `Hartlage Wine' New and rare. A 2001
introduction. Richard Hartlage, was an undergraduate student in Horticultural Science at North
Carolina State University when he performed the reciprocal crosses between Calycanthus (
Sinocalycanthus) chinensis and Calycanthus floridus. This hybrid has the best qualities of
both parents and shows hybrid vigor. Large (4-5"), maroon, wine red flowers with light fragrance
are long lasting. The floral display is produced over a long period of time in late spring and
grows more impressive as the plant matures each year. {8'H x 8'W] but can go to [15'H x 10'W]
when very happy. Full sun to light shade. Zones 5-8.

Camellias - Cold Hardy Hybrids
Those living in Zones 6 can now enjoy the new cold hardy
camellias. Dr. William Ackerman at the U.S. National Arboretum and now into retirement
continues to work on developing these beauties that are hardy to (-5 to -10 degrees and a few
to -15 degrees). Dr. Clifford Parks, Professor of Biology at the University of North Carolina
has also been working on cold hardy camellias. Give protection from winter winds and light
shade for best siting in the garden. [4-7'H and taller at full maturity].
SPRING BLOOMERS - Mostly Camellia japonica
April Blush (`Berenice Boddy' x `Dr. Tinsley') A good selection for a small area.
A compact plant with slow to medium growth and a heavy bud set. Flowers are large
blush/shell-pink, semi-double. Mid to late season Spring bloom.

April Dawn (`Berenice Boddy' x `Dr. Tinsley') A variegated introduction by Dr. Parks.
Flowers are shades of rose-pink, shell-pink and white variegation (not virus) with a formal
double form. Growth is vigorous, erect with a very heavy bud set. Blooms over a long period
of time from mid to late Spring season. Cold Hardy to Zone 6B and Zone 6A with protection.

April Kiss (`Berenice Boddy' x `Reg Ragland') The first of the April series
to bloom in the spring. Flowers are small, medium red to red-pink with a formal
double form. Growth rate is moderate with a compact form and makes a heavy bud set.

April Remembered (`Berenice Boddy' x `Dr. Tinsley') Flowers are large cream
colored shading to pink on the outer edges of the petals creating a two-tone affect,
semi-double form. Blooms season early to late. A vigorous, fast growing plant. A Dr. Parks
intoduction. Cold hardy to Zone 6B and Zone 6A with protection.

Betty Sette (C. japonica `Frost Queen' x C. japonica `Variety Z') Formal double
flowers are on the darker side of shell pink with good substance. A compact and upright
growth habit at an average rate. Leaves are broad, glossy and dark green. Late bloom season.

Governor Mouton Oriental red, sometimes splashed with white, semi-double to loose

FALL/WINTER BLOOMERS
Jean May A great selection where a smaller (dwarf) plant is needed. `Jean May'
grows slowly, with arching growth, to under 4'. A good cultivar for espalier but should be
placed in a partially shaded location. Foliage is dark and glossy. Flowers are shell pink,
semi-double. Bloom time is early fall. Cold hardy to Zone 6.

Kanjiro (C. hiemalis) Blooms of rose pink shading to rose red on the edges are

Londontowne Blush (`C. japonica `Billie McCaskill' x C. oleifera `Plain Jane')
Plant is compact, globular and moderate in growth. Flowers are pale pink, single to
semi-double, 3 1/2" usually with ten petals, heavily notched with a center whirl of stamens.
Blooms November to December. Developed by Dr. William Ackerman. Cold hardy to -10

Plain Jane-Open pollinated seedlings These are open pollinated seedlings from C.
oliefera `Plain Jane'. Plain Jane is hardy to -15 degrees. Dr. Ackerman uses `Plain Jane'
mostly (more than Lu Shan Snow) in his hybridizing as it is hardier and the buds are also
hardier. Blooms will are single white. As these are seedlings form/color may
vary slightly. Seedlings hardy -10 to -15 degrees. 3 Gallon. $32.00

Snow Flurry (C. oleifera (PL 162561 x `Frost Priness'))
Beautiful white flowers with full peony to anemone form. The earliest of the fall blooming
series from late September to mid November. Form is moderately vigorous,
globular to spreading, with arching branches. Cold hardy to -10 degrees.

Winter's Fancy (C. hiemalis ' Bill Wylam' x (C. Hiemalis 'Shishi-gashira' x C. oleifera '
Plain Jane')). A moderately vigorous, upright and outward grower that lends itself to
utilization as a hedge plant. The leaves are leathery and glossy dark green.
Very floriferous with deep pink, semi-double, creped blooms. A Dr. William ackerman
introduction. Bloom season October to November. Cold hardy to -5 degrees. 1 Gal. $22.00
Winter's Snowman ((C. sasanqua 'Narumi-gata' x C.hiemalis 'Shishi-gashira') x C oleifera
'Plain Jane'). Flowers are white, semi-double to mostly anemone. Leaves are
leathery, semi-glossy and dark green that set off the white blooms. The growth in spring and
summer has a wonderful burgundy coloring. Growth habit is vigorous, upright to columnar which
would lend itself to making a tall, narrow hedge. Blooms from mid-November through December.

Winter's Star (C.oleifera `Lu Shan Snow' x C. heimalis `Showa-no-sakae') Blooms from
very early October through November. Single large violet-pink flowers. Moderate to vigorous,

Campsis radicans `Flava' (Trumpet Creeper, Trumpet Vine) Soft yellow trumpet-shaped
flowers in summer attract butterflies and hummingbirds. A vigorous deciduous vine that performs
best in full sun. Very easy to grow. As Michael Dirr says "If you cannot grow this,
give up gardening." Grows on trellis, walls etc. Native Pennsylvania to Missouri, Florida

Cercis canadensis 'Covey' Lavender Twist PP#10328 A weeping Redbud is now available.
Discovered by Tim Brotzman growing in the New York garden of Connie Covey - a forty year old
tree is 5' high by 8' wide. From a central leader the branches twist and weep to form an arching
elegant umbrella. In the spring the drooping branches are covered with purplish pink flowers.
The heart-shaped leaves are slightly larger than found on other Redbuds. The plants maybe
staked further to gain additional height. This native tree now attains an elegant new shape
to add to the garden. Effective as a specimen plant, especially nice in a woodland setting.
A small tree with height somewhat dependent on if the central leader is staked for further

Crytomeria japonica `Sekkan'
The new growth is nearly white, changing to green in the heat of summer. A lovely conifer 6-8'
in 10 years, 20' plus at maturity. Full sun but will tolerate light shade.

Fothergilla gardenii `Mt. Airy' These outstanding native plants are members
of the witchhazel family. Honey scented, bottle brush-like flowers in early spring
before the leaves. Fall colors are spectacular bright yellow, orange and red. Photos show
fabulous fall color and spring bloom of white bottle brush flowers. Full sun
to part shade. [5' to 6'H] Zones 6-9. 3 Gallon. $29.00

Hydrangea macrophylla `Pia' A compact, 2' to 3' form with 3 to 4" diameter pink flowers.
Young plants flower heavily. Light sun to more shade as one goes south.

Hydrangea paniculata `Tardiva' This 8-12' tree-form shrub has showy flower
clusters in white about 6" long in August which rival the best Oakleaf. The flower
clusters are long lasting. Sun to Partial shade. Can be pruned in winter or early
spring as it blooms on new wood. Probably the most cold hardy species.

Ilex verticillata `Sunset' (Winterberry Holly)
A delight for the winter garden with colorful large reddish orange to red 7/16" berries.
The decidious hollies are very showy with the berries covering the naked branches, especially
when framed with snow. Birds find the berries a good late winter treat. As with other hollies,
female and male flowers are on separate plants. A male pollinator (Apollo) is required
for good fruit production. Does well in light or heavy soils. Also grows at water
side or in wet soils. Full sun or partial shade with best fruit set in more sun.

A male pollinator for `Sunset' and other late-blooming verticillata females.

Illicium floridanum `Halley's Comet' (Florida Anise)
An aromatic, broadleaf evergreen with 2" deep red flowers. Heavy flower production
over a long period of time, sometimes into fall. Illiciums are very deer resistant.

Indigofera kirilowii This attractive member of the pea family has blooms
of lovely rose-pink in racemes up to 5" long. The blooming period is long over most
of the summer. A low, dense suckering shrub growing 2-3feet. Can be used as a ground cover.
As it flowers on current season growth, it can be treated as an herbacious perennial.

Lagerstroemia indica (Crapemyrtle) - from Michael Dirr "Landscape Value:
Handsome and very beautiful specimen shrub or tree; often used in groups and underplanted
with a ground cover; the dark green ground cover acts as a foil for the handsome bark;
some of the smaller types are used as hedges, screen, masses; ;many of the new introductions
from the U.S. National Arboretum are superior to the run-of-the mill cultivars; crapemyrtles
are often given credit only for flower but many have superb fall color and excellent bark."
The architectural framework can be exquisite. Crapemyrtle thrives in heat and is drought

Lonicera sempervirens `Magnifica' (Trumpet honeysuckle, Coral Honeysuckle)
A medium growing twing vine. New growth is reddish purple. Bright red, 2" long flowers
with a yellowish interior. Flowers non fragrant but are a humminbird magnet. Tends to repeat
flower if given summer moisture. A few blooms here at the end of November. Full sun for best flowering but will tolerate partial shade.

Loropetallum chinense `Zhuzhou Fuschia' Evergreen blackish maroon leaves and hot
fuschia-pink flowers. Flowers late March through April. Leaf color holds in the heat.

Rhododendron austrinum `Millie Mac' (Florida Azalea) Fragrant
yellow-centered flowers bordered with white occur 8-15 together in April-May.

Rhododendron canescens `Varnadoes Phlox Pink' (Piedmont Azalea) This variety
has very fragrant tubular, vivid pink flowers. Compact to upright growth.

Schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Moonlight' (Japanese Hydrangea Vine)
A distinct climber in that the vine stays flat and does not develop the protruding woody
frameworkk of H. a. subsp. petiolaris. The inflorescences are flat topped and 8 to 10"
wide, showing a slight drooping tendency so that one looks up into the bloom. Self
climbing by cementing itself with root-like holdfasts. 'Moonlight' has light
gray-silver shading/mottling over the upper leaf surface. Grows slowly to at least 20'.

Vitex agnus-castus `Salinas Pink' (Chastetree) A medium-sized shrub to

Weigela florida `Brigela' PPAF French Lace
A wow combination of variegated green leaves edged in gold and brightly contrasting
dark red flowers in spring. After the big spring flush of blooms, the plant blooms lightly
